Celebration of lights — a time for community worship, music and communal meals. All are welcome.
A place of worship, culture, and community in Pretoria.
Shree Marrieamman Temple- Marabastad (est. 1905) is the oldest Hindu temple in Pretoria and a living hub for the city's Tamil community. The complex — set within Marabastad’s Asiatic Bazaar — blends South Indian temple traditions with a distinctly local history of migration, commerce and communal care.
The temple began as a modest wood-and-iron shrine and was progressively rebuilt as the local community grew. The Tamil Society of Pretoria and the Pretoria Tamil League were instrumental in funding and organising the site’s development, which included a new cella and assembly hall in 1927 and the celebrated gopuram completed in 1938.
The temple follows the Dravidian (south Indian) architectural tradition. The gopuram — the sculpted, multi-tiered entrance tower — is a dominant visual and ritual element. It consists of repeated horizontal tiers, richly modelled niches and sculptural figures, and is capped with seven kalasas. The temple also contains a cella (sanctum), an arda mandapam (small pavilion) and a maha mandapam (large pavilion) for public gatherings.
Monthly pujas, abhishekam and seasonal festivals are central to the temple’s life. Our festivals are marked with special ceremonies, music and communal meals.
A series of conservation projects have been completed in partnership with the community. The 1990s work revived the gopuram’s colour and installed new murtis produced by Indian artisans. In 2011, Gordon Verhoef & Krause undertook repairs after lightning damage, replacing and restoring ornamental vases, plaster, and fragile mouldings.
Beyond its architectural value, the temple is a social institution: a place of worship, a venue for festivals, and a repository of community memory and identity. Its continuity reflects strong local stewardship and cultural resilience.
Our calendar blends ritual observance with community gatherings — festivals, pujas and charitable events across the year. Everyone is welcome to participate.
